Remote Water Suppliers
Remote water supply differs from local supply in particular through three characteristics:
- a large water transport distance to be overcome,
- the supply of several communities,
- a water charge, which is mainly effected at redistributors and not at end-customers
From these result various specific requirements, which are to be observed with planning and operation of a remote water supply system. Therefore, in comparison with direct suppliers, remote water supply companies show a series of special features, which must also be taken into account with a benchmarking.
Corporate benchmarking for remote water supply is developed from the German sub-project of the field test of the IWA performance indicator system and has already been performed in co-operation with the IWW – Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institute for Water in Mülheim a.d. Ruhr - since the 2003 survey year. From the 2006 survey year onwards, the methodical separation and further development of the project took place in a special corporate benchmarking for remote water supply companies.
Business management or works management is responsible for the safeguarding and implementation of the specifications of the owners. Using the normal instruments, such as economic plan, annual financial report or remuneration calculation, the boards are in many cases overburdened, because these instruments have been produced by and for business people. The above named instruments are often hardly suitable in order to comment upon business data, constraints and relationships. With this, not only communication and agreement with the boards is handicapped. In many cases, through this – at least from a business point of view – even sub-optimum decisions are made. In addition, translating the specifications of the boards and highlighting the positive and negative effects transparently to all employees also belong to the management tasks.
With the annual financial report, which is produced for each survey year, the participating companies receive an instrument for the support of management tasks. Using it, not only the results of the continuous efforts for economic business management are quantified. It is also suitable as resilient argumentation aid in order to substantiate necessary decisions for the configuration of the company in front of advisory boards or shareholders’ meetings or to communicate management decisions objectively and transparently internally in the company.
